Aristide Maillol was born in 1861 in Banyuls sur Mer, southern France. He received his artistic training in Paris, where he initially focused on painting and the decorative arts. His early research focused on tapestry and drawing, disciplines that nurtured his sense of composition and surface. It was not until the end of the nineteenth century that he turned decisively towards sculpture. 

The transition to sculpture marked a profound transformation in his approach. Maillol gradually moved away from expressive effects and academic naturalism to develop a language based on simplicity, the stability and the clarity of volumes. He favors full, compact forms, inscribed in a logic of balance and permanence. This approach differs markedly from the dramatic expressiveness of some of his contemporaries. 

Visit female figure becomes the central subject of his sculptural work. Maillol treats it as a harmonious construction, in which each volume contributes to the overall balance. Bodies are often depicted in calm attitudes, seated or standing, without narration or excessive gesture. This restraint lends his sculptures a timeless dimension, akin to the ancient statuary he admired. 

Material plays an essential role in his work. He creates his works in bronze, in stone or in earth, with particular attention to the continuity of surfaces and the legibility of masses. Modeling is deliberately simplified, avoiding superfluous detail in favor of a clear, stable construction. This mastery of form helps inscribe his work in a modernity founded on tradition. 

At the beginning of the 20th century, Maillol gained considerable recognition. His sculptures were exhibited and installed in public spaces, affirming a new conception of monumental sculpture. He thus helped redefine the place of sculpture in modern art, proposing an alternative based on serenity and balance rather than expressive rupture. 

Alongside his sculptural work, Maillol was also active as a painter and engraver, but it was his sculptural work that made a lasting impression on the history of art. Until his death in 1944, he developed a coherent whole, faithful to his formal principles and his vision of the human body. 

Today, Aristide Maillol is considered one of the major sculptors of the 20th century. His work embodies a silent modernity, based on stability, measure and the search for a lasting formal ideal, which continues to influence contemporary sculpture.
