Auguste Moreau: the sculptural poetry of the Belle Époque

Born in Dijon in 1834, Auguste Moreau belongs to one of the great sculpting families of the 19th century. Alongside his brothers Louis and Hippolyte, he helped spread a decorative and naturalist style that left a lasting mark on French art. Trained in the family workshops, he developed a remarkable mastery of modeling, movement and portraiture from an early age.

An heir to Romanticism and Naturalism

Auguste Moreau's work is in line with the aesthetic trends of the second half of the 19th century. At a time characterized by artistic effervescence, he distinguished himself by his accessible, expressive and deeply poetic sculpture. His creations focus on mythological, allegorical and floral themes. He excelled at depicting young women, children, nymphs and idealized figures, treating them with the gentleness for which he is renowned.

A delicate, harmonious style

Auguste Moreau's sculptures are distinguished by their elegance, finesse and ability to capture the light. The lines are supple, the silhouettes slender, the faces gentle. He perfectly masters the transition between volumes, the fluidity of drapery and the delicacy of gesture. Whether in bronze, zinc or regula, his hand is always attentive to detail, texture and attitude.

His works evoke spring, dance, nature, innocence and reverie. They reflect the sensual, refined imagination of the Belle Époque, when decorative sculpture played a central role in bourgeois and artistic interiors.

Popular decorative subjects

Auguste Moreau created a large number of decorative models. His creations include lamps, sculpted groups, ornate clocks, statuettes and allegorical subjects, all of which showcase his sense of charm and poetry. The distribution of his work by French foundries helped popularize his style among a wide audience.
