From ancient origins to Renaissance mirrors

Over time, technology evolved and glass began to be used during the Middle Ages, but it was during the Renaissance that glass mirrors became objets d'art. The mirrors of Venice, in particular, were renowned for their clarity and the delicate art of framing, often decorated with gold and precious elements.

The Baroque and Rococo Eras: Reflections of the Lavish

In the 17th and 18th centuries, mirrors became symbols of luxury and status. Baroque and Rococo mirrors were grandiose and richly decorated, characterised by gilded frames adorned with floral motifs and putti. These mirrors were not just vanity tools, but majestic centrepieces of the opulent interiors of the period.

The 19th Century: Industrialisation and Democratisation

The industrialisation of the 19th century made mirror production cheaper and more accessible. Styles became more varied, with the appearance of bevelled mirrors, mantelpiece mirrors and simple framed mirrors adapted to the rise of the bourgeoisie and less busy interiors.

From Modern to Contemporary

In the 20th century and right up to the present day, mirrors reflect artistic movements such as Art Deco, Modernism and Minimalism. Shapes became more streamlined, frames less ornate, and the emphasis was placed on functionality as well as aesthetics.
