Demétre Haralamb Chiparus was born in 1886 in Romania. He moved to Paris at the beginning of the 20th century, where he trained as a sculptor in a particularly dynamic artistic context. Chiparus specialised in small- and medium-format decorative sculpture for the publishing industry. He adopted the chryselephantine sculpture, the technique combines bronze and ivory, sometimes complemented by coloured materials. This technique allows for a refined rendering of surfaces and great precision in the treatment of details, particularly for faces, hands and costumes.
