Ivan Meštrović (1883-1962) was a major Croatian sculptor of the 20th century. His work, both monumental and symbolic, combines classical tradition, modernity and a spiritual dimension. He occupies a central place in the history of European and international sculpture.

Ivan Meštrović was born in 1883 in Croatia, then part of the Austro-Hungarian Empire. He trained as a sculptor in a context marked by academic teaching and the influence of the modern European movements of the early twentieth century. Very early on, he developed a sensitivity towards monumentality and the expressive power of sculpted form.

His work is characterised by a synthetic approach in which the human figure takes centre stage. Meštrović treats the body as a vehicle for symbolic expression, carrying themes linked to history, spirituality, suffering and human dignity. The figures are often massive, solidly constructed, with powerful volumes and a formal simplification that reinforces their visual impact.

Monumental sculpture is an essential aspect of his work. Meštrović creates ensembles for public spaces, commemorative monuments and integrated architectural works. These creations demonstrate a keen sense of scale, of the relationship between sculpture and the environment, and an ability to translate collective ideas into durable, legible forms.

Stylistically, his work establishes a dialogue between classical heritage and modernity. References to Antiquity, the Renaissance and medieval sculpture are perceptible, but they are reinterpreted through a simplification of lines and restrained expressivity. This synthesis gives his work a timeless dimension, detached from the effects of fashion.

Meštrović works with a variety of materials, including stone, the bronze and the wood, he uses them according to the context and meaning of the work. The treatment of the surface varies according to the project, from smooth finishes to rougher textures, accentuating the expressive power of the volumes.

Throughout his career, he has exerted a major influence and enjoyed international recognition. His work is exhibited and installed in many countries, reflecting a vision of sculpture as a universal language capable of conveying fundamental human values.

Ivan Meštrović dies in 1962. His work remains one of the major contributions to twentieth-century sculpture. It is distinguished by the power of its forms, the depth of its themes and a conception of sculpture as an art that is at once plastic, symbolic and spiritual.
