Jean Baptiste Carpeaux was born in 1827 in Valenciennes. From a modest background, he trained in Paris, where he received a rigorous academic education based on drawing and the study of anatomy. His work was part of a period of transition between academicism and modernity. Jean Baptiste Carpeaux died in 1875. His work remains one of the most influential of nineteenth-century French sculpture. It is recognised today for its expressive power, its technical mastery and its essential role in the development of modern sculpture.
