Michelangelo Buonarroti (1475-1564) was an Italian sculptor, painter and architect, and a major figure of the Renaissance. His work is distinguished by an exceptional mastery of the human figure, a deep understanding of anatomy and a monumental vision of form.
Michelangelo Buonarroti was born in 1475 à Caprese, in Tuscany. He trained from an early age in Florence, in an artistic context marked by the legacy of Antiquity and the intellectual renewal of the Renaissance. His apprenticeship was based on the study of drawing, ancient sculpture and anatomy, the essential foundations of his artistic language.
La sculpture is at the heart of his approach. Michelangelo conceived of the block of marble as a material to be set free, seeing form as already contained within the stone. The result is a powerful modelling, in which the muscular tension, bone structure and dynamics of the human body are rendered with unprecedented precision and intensity. The human figure became the main vehicle for artistic and spiritual expression.
His sculptures are characterised by an assertive monumentality, regardless of their actual size. The bodies are built to controlled proportions, often amplified to reinforce their expressive power. The poses reflect a balance between rest and tension, giving the impression of contained energy. This approach gives his works an almost architectural presence in space.
Alongside his sculpture, Michelangelo developed a major body of pictorial and architectural work. In paint, he applied the same principles of monumentality and anatomical construction, paying particular attention to drawing. The figures are treated as sculpted volumes, even when they are integrated into complex compositions.
Itsarchitect extends this vision of form. He saw architecture as an extension of sculpture, emphasising the power of mass, the clarity of line and the harmony of proportion. This approach helped to profoundly renew the architectural language of the late Renaissance.
Michelangelo's work is marked by a constant reflection on the human condition, spirituality and the relationship between body and soul. The figures express both physical strength and a deep inner dimension, reflecting a vision of art as a means of intellectual and spiritual elevation.
Michelangelo Buonarroti died in 1564. His work occupies a central place in the history of Western art. It was one of the high points of the Renaissance and had a lasting influence on the sculpture, painting and architecture of the centuries that followed, thanks to its formal mastery and profoundly humanist vision.
