Yves Saint Laurent (1936-2008) was a major French fashion designer of the second half of the 20th century. Trained by Christian Dior, he founded his own fashion house in 1961. He profoundly renewed women's fashion with modern silhouettes, the power of the suit, the introduction of the dinner jacket and a vision of clothing based on freedom and construction.

Yves Saint Laurent was born in 1936 in Oran. From an early age, he showed a keen interest in drawing and sewing, which he developed through his own creations. At the end of the 1950s, he joined the house of Christian Dior, he became one of Dior's most promising collaborators. When Christian Dior died in 1957, he was appointed artistic director and presented a collection that marked a significant evolution in the house's style. 

Visit 1961, he founded his own fashion house with a vision centred on modernity, structure and the emancipation of the female silhouette. From his very first collections, Saint Laurent asserted an aesthetic language based on clean lines, controlled shapes and a balance between rigour and sensuality. Visit dinner jacket, created in the 1960s, became one of its most emblematic signatures. It reflects his desire to adapt traditionally masculine dress codes to an elegant, assertive feminine silhouette. 

The tailors, structured coats, straight dresses and garments inspired by art, travel or fashion history make up a creative vocabulary deeply rooted in the visual culture of the 20th century. Saint Laurent drew inspiration from painting, theatre, historical costume and popular clothing to create silhouettes that combined references and innovation. Among his most recognisable pieces are designs inspired by modern art, where colour and construction become structuring elements. 

The company is also developing the ready-to-wear, this made it possible to broaden the distribution of his style and offer more accessible fashion, without abandoning the high standards of form that characterise his work. This choice contributed to the lasting transformation of the industry, linking traditional couture with contemporary fashion aimed at a wider public. 

Over the decades, Yves Saint Laurent created a vast body of work combining elegance, disciplined tailoring and freedom of expression. Certain silhouettes became benchmarks for modern clothing. The emphasis he placed on colour, geometry and structure reflected his conception of clothing as an artistic object, capable of reflecting the body while transforming it. 

Yves Saint Laurent gradually ceased trading in the 2000s and disappeared in 2008. His house remains one of the great references of French fashion. His work embodies the modernity of twentieth-century couture, the importance of line, the use of clothing as a sign of freedom and a way of conceiving fashion as both heritage and creation.
