Alberto Giacometti was born in 1901 à Borgonovo, he grew up in the Swiss canton of Graubünden, in an artistic environment marked by painting. He first trained with his father, before studying in Geneva and then Paris, where he settled permanently in the 1920s. His move to the French capital marked a decisive turning point in his career, and put him at the heart of the modern art scene. 

His early work was influenced by academic sculpture, cubism and the so-called primitive arts. In the 1930s, Giacometti briefly participated in the Surrealist movement, producing works in which the sculpted object became a bearer of symbolic tension and enigmatic forms. This period saw the emergence of conceptual sculptures that questioned the relationship between the object, space and the imaginary. 

From the end of the 1930s onwards, Giacometti refocused his attention on the human figure, which became the main subject of his work. After the Second World War, he developed an immediately recognisable sculptural language, characterised by silhouettes slender, these figures seem both fragile and intensely present. These figures seem both fragile and intensely present, reflecting on the human condition, solitude and the distance between people. 

The relationship with space is fundamental to his work. The figures are conceived as points of tension in a surrounding void, where the sculpture is never isolated but always in dialogue with the space around it. Giacometti worked the material by successive additions and removals, leaving visible the traces of his gesture, which gives his works an almost vibrant dimension. 

Alongside his sculpture, Giacometti also developed an important body of graphic work. His drawings and paintings focus on portraits, studio interiors and urban landscapes. The line, often repeated and insistent, reflects the same quest as in sculpture, to capture the presence of the model without ever freezing it. 

Throughout his career, Giacometti exhibited regularly and gained increasing recognition. His Paris studio became a place of intense production and constant reflection on the act of creation. Until his death in 1966, his work is coherent, marked by repetition, variation and a deepening of the same formal and existential questioning. 

Today, Alberto Giacometti is considered one of the most important artists of the 20th century. His work embodies a singular vision of modern sculpture, in which form, space and the human presence come together in a permanent tension, giving rise to figures that have become emblematic of contemporary art.
