Raoul Dufy was born in 1877 in Le Havre. He studied in his home town before moving to Paris and the École Nationale des Beaux-Arts, where he discovered the artistic research of the late 19th century. His encounter with fauvism at the beginning of the twentieth century was an important milestone. He adopted a free and dazzling use of colour, characterised by bold strokes and bright luminosity, while maintaining an expressive and supple drawing.
From the 1910s onwards, Dufy developed a personal style that gradually moved away from Fauvism. He favoured a calligraphic line, his drawings are fast, almost musical, and he combines them with light, flat colours. This special relationship between drawing and colour became one of the signatures of his work. He depicted harbours, regattas, seaside scenes, workshops, flowers and gardens, with a sensitivity in which movement and light played a central role.
His interest in the decorative arts was an essential part of his career. Dufy created fabrics, and ceramics, and decorative panels, and engravings and illustrations, he collaborated with French houses and contributed to the development of modern decorative art. His floral motifs, arabesques and colour harmonies reflect a deep understanding of visual rhythms and decorative effects.
During the 1920s and 1930s, Dufy further asserted his style in compositions in which perspective became freer and line a dominant element. His music scenes, orchestras and instruments bear witness to his taste for subjects linked to sound and movement. He also created vast public settings, including monumental panels for international exhibitions, revealing his ability to transpose his graphic language to large-scale formats.
In his work, colour is less descriptive than suggestive. It creates an atmosphere, evokes a climate and organises pictorial space. Dufy was particularly interested in the way in which blue, green or pink could express the air, the light or the vibration of a landscape. His compositions are striking for their controlled spontaneity, the freshness of their palette and the apparent lightness of their carefully considered lines.
Raoul Dufy continued to work until his death in 1953. He left an extremely varied body of work in which painting, drawing, engraving and the decorative arts all interact. His work occupies an important place in the history of twentieth-century French art, illustrating an approach in which the pleasure of the eye, the clarity of the composition and the inner music of the line define a singular and enduring aesthetic.
